Introducing the Arctic Education Alliance! This project is an exciting new partnership between US and Greenland education and natural resource institutions that is led by the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). The purpose of this project is to help develop ethically-conscious and culturally-relevant natural resource management, tourism, and hospitality curriculum and programs for Greenlandic students, based on Greenlandic needs, and through the guidance of Greenland’s communities and existing institutions.

The $1.8 million grant was awarded through a competitive selection process at the U.S. Department of State and spans 2020-2022. While there were several applicants, our proposal was successful for its attention to cultural competency and an on-the-ground approach to networking. As UAF is the only US institution with a large Inuit population of students and is staffed by many Indigenous experts, I'm really looking forward to what we can achieve together.

There’s lots of work to do over the next two years, but I will do my best to ensure that the effort is fruitful, useful, and respectful of Inuit perspectives, needs, and knowledge. I am coming on board as the project’s Indigenous Knowledge and Conservation Advisor and hope to bring a holistic perspective to this education initiative. I personally am most excited to invite 19 Greenlandic students to Alaska to participate in workshops and cultural exchanges at the University of Alaska Fairbanks next year! Here’s to fostering greater access to Arctic education and supporting Inuit students everywhere.
